Game servers going offline after less than a year
Forgotten Runiverse, the fantasy MMORPG built on the Ronin blockchain, is shutting down its live servers. The team announced the suspension on social media, explaining that maintaining the game in its current state no longer makes financial sense.
I think this is becoming a familiar pattern in crypto gaming. Less than a year after its global launch, the browser-based game will become inaccessible starting Tuesday. The team was pretty clear about their reasoning—they’ve been facing overwhelming challenges for months, and despite their efforts, the economics just don’t work right now.
Player data preserved, but future uncertain
They’re not calling this a permanent shutdown, though. The team says all account and progress data will be preserved securely. They described the situation as the Runiverse “merely resting” rather than being gone forever. Updates will come if and when they have them, but there’s no timeline for a potential return.
What’s interesting is that this game had some notable backing. It raised funds from Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and others. At one point, it even received approval for development across major console platforms—Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox. That makes the current situation perhaps more surprising, or maybe it just shows how difficult this space really is.
Part of broader crypto gaming trend
This isn’t an isolated case. Last year saw several high-profile blockchain games shut down, including Deadrop, Nyan Heroes, and Pirate Nation. The trend appears to be continuing into 2026. Funding seems to be drying up, and user adoption remains a persistent challenge for many projects.
Forgotten Runiverse originated from the lore of the Forgotten Runes Wizard’s Cult NFT collection on Ethereum. It launched globally after conducting a stress test that actually encouraged users to try to crash its servers. The open-world game was free-to-play and browser-based, which should have made it accessible.
Community reaction mixed
On social media, reactions have been mixed. Some express disappointment, while others praise the team for their efforts. Crypto gaming enthusiasts don’t seem entirely surprised, which says something about the current state of the industry.
The team hasn’t responded to media requests for additional comment. They’re probably focused on the technical aspects of preserving player data and evaluating their options. It’s a tough position to be in—building something ambitious, getting notable backing, and then having to pull back because the numbers don’t add up.
Maybe this is just part of the natural evolution of the crypto gaming space. Projects come and go, teams learn, and the industry figures out what actually works. But for players who invested time in building their characters and exploring the Runiverse, it’s certainly disappointing to see the servers go dark.
The bigger question is what happens next. Will we see more sustainable models emerge, or will this pattern of promising projects shutting down continue? Only time will tell, but for now, the Forgotten Runiverse joins a growing list of crypto games that couldn’t make it work financially.
